FarmShare subscribers have inquired about how to use the endless varieties of Ohio apples in season this time of year. Below we've provided a few links to help you differentiate the eaters from the bakers and more.

WVIZ will air Botany of Desire based on the book by Michael Pollan on Wed., October 28 at 8pm.
From the WVIZ website... "The human-plant relationship is explored via the stories of the apple, the tulip, marijuana and the potato. Included: how the apple came to be sweet; "tulip mania" in the Netherlands circa the 1630s, when tulips were traded for large sums of money; the history and physiology of marijuana; the genetically modified (and no longer available) New Leaf potato, which featured a microorganism that repelled potato beetles. Michael Pollan ("The Botany of Desire") hosts. Frances McDormand narrates."

We ran across this interesting interview with Besty Donald, a professor at Canada's Queens Unviversity who is studying local food systems. Listen and read the entire interview at earthandsky.org.

It was a cauliflower extravaganza this week. FarmShare subscribers are enjoying three different types: traditional white, green and beautiful Romanesco. If you're pondering what to do with the alien-like Romanesco, here's a recipe we thought you might like. Of course, you can substitute any cauliflower if you didn't receive Romanesco. We discovered the recipe for Maccheroncini With Romanesco on a quick Google search. Click here  for the recipe and article in New York Magazine.

We just ran across this article on the Mother Nature Network. It provides a nice snapshot of the new American Farmer. Young or old, we need them all. More farmers mean a strong, locally-based food system for all.

The article You Say Tomato, I Say Agricultural Disaster by Dan Barber was published in the Sunday, Aug. 9 edition of The New York Times and it's worth a read. It does a great job of explaining what's happening with our tomatoes and potatoes this season and it sheds some light on the agricultural big picture as well.

This week, FarmShare is celebrating its first birthday!

One year ago on August 7th, we made our very first delivery to Tower City.

Our first year has been a busy and bountiful one. We’ve delivered nearly 1500 tote bags of locally grown fruits and vegetables to FarmShare subscribers in the past year. We continue to provide a dependable, weekly sales opportunity for a growing number of Northeast Ohio farmers. And we’re making local and seasonal eating more convenient and fun for hundreds of local families.

We couldn’t do it without our amazing team of local farmers who grow the freshest and finest produce in the land. And we certainly couldn't do it without YOU, our dedicated subscribers. THANK YOU to all of you for making the commitment to local food and farms with your FarmShare subscription this season!

We're looking forward to much more local deliciousness as our 2009 season progresses.

Thanks for making our first year a success!
